Research study links sleep deprivation to diabetes
Added: 6 May 2010
There is increasing published evidence of the link between sleep deprivation and the detrimental effects on health. A recent article published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism outlines how even a single night of sleep restriction can affect insulin sensitivity (important in the long-term development of diabetes). The abstract can be found here.
SNORE Australia recommends that patients with diabetes or insulin resistance be assessed for chronic sleep-deprivation and other sleep-disorders (especially obstructive sleep apnoea, as untreated sleep apnoea has been shown to also affect diabetes treatment).
